NRG - Indian River Power Plant, Facility Upgrade

BCI was awarded the construction services/support work contract as part of the overall 500 million pollution control retrofit of the existing Indian River coal fired electric power plant. The contract and scope of services were unique in nature and many were a first for BCI which included multiple trades and craftsman from various union jurisdictions as the project was conducted under the National Maintenance Agreement. Craftsman from the carpenter, ironworker, teamster, electrical, plumber and pipefitter, laborer, cement finisher, and operating engineer unions were utilized throughout the project.

As the project employed over 500 tradesman at its peak, BCI was contracted to provide a bus service to transport the tradesman to and from a remote satellite parking area at the beginning and end of the shifts along with multiple mid-day runs at established construction and fabrication sites. 5 buses were purchased and maintained throughout the 2 year project for this purpose along with communication devices to manage the flow and routes as the project was spread out among a large area of work.

A large temporary structure of 10,000 square feet was erected using a Sprung Structures fabric building. This structure was the main meeting place for project safety meetings, orientations, and also served as a place for craftsman to eat and store personal items during shifts. It was fitted out with 100 tables, 500 chairs, 500 lockers, and was fully heated and air conditioned. BCI also constructed a pedestrian bridge over an existing cooling tower water aqueduct for access from the main site to the Sprung structure.

Since the project required a vast amount of laydown areas and storage space, BCI erected a 10,500 square foot warehouse to store key mechanical and electrical components to be used and different portions of the project. Other scope of services included providing a MAC 4 security portal complete with all electronics including cameras, computers, software, proximity cards, etc. This portal was used by all personal to enter and exit the site. We were also responsible for providing large scale restroom trailers, site clean-up, snow removal, water truck and forklift services, site grass mowing and weed control, safety measures, potable water source shed complete with manifold for filling water container to be used throughout the site, and a host of general construction items during the length of the project.

The project was a great success and BCI played a critical role in the support and harmony of multiple trades and companies to achieve the scheduled project completion on time.
